Program Overview

A key national research university with a history of more than 100 years, Sichuan University is a comprehensive institution with the widest selection of disciplines in West China. Sichuan University enjoys a deep cultural background and eminent scholarly research tradition. The university is dedicated to the internationalization of China's higher education system and actively seeks opportunities for collaboration and scientific research with institutions of higher education and corporate partners all over the world. Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan Province, home to approximately 10 million people, and is located in southwest China at the western edge of the Sichuan Basin. It is known as one of the most important economic centers and is a major transportation and communication hub in China. Historically, it has played an important role in the political, economical, cultural, and military development of southwest China. Chengdu is regarded as the starting point of the Southern Silk Road and is the gateway to the Tibet Autonomous Region. The surrounding region is famous for its three unique characteristics: beautiful scenery, Bashu Culture, and home of the Giant Pandas.

Chengdu is a great place to live with all the amenities and conveniences of a modernized city, but a cost of living much less than Beijing and Shanghai. Like other key cities in China, Chengdu is rapidly growing, yet the pace of life is notably less hectic. The people of Chengdu enjoy a balanced lifestyle and benefit from all the resources that the city and province have to offer.

Housing

AsiaLearn students attending Sichuan University are invited to live on-campus in student dormitories. Limited single and twin shared accommodation is available with private bathroom and shower. Bedding, desks, chairs, and Internet access is provided. Cafeterias and local restaurants are within close proximity to the dorms. Meals are not included in the program fees.

Academic Areas

Sichuan University developed the Center of China Studies to specifically address the needs of international students who wish to learn about Chinese language and culture. This program also offers a range of courses with English instruction to meet the academic needs of students from a variety of academic areas. No prior language study is required.

Language Component

Intensive and non-intensive language instruction in Mandarin is available each semester with levels ranging from beginner to advanced. All other classes included in the Center of China Studies are instructed in English.

Special Program Features

Participants have the option of participating in the Friendship Family Program with local Chinese families.  The Friendship Family experience provides students with a unique opportunity to spend time with local families in order to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese family life and experience a greater cultural interaction and language skills development.

Students of all majors are welcome to apply, and no prior language skill is required as some or all courses are taught in English at each university. Scholarships are available.
