Castle StreetHost City and Institution:Cirencester is a market town in Gloucestershire, England, 93 miles west northwest of London. It lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the River Thames, and is the largest town in the Cotswold District. The first reference to the town was by Ptolemy in 150 AD. The parish church of St John the Baptist, often referred to as the Cathedral of the Cotswolds, has a nave built in 1515 to 1530.

To the west of the town is Cirencester House, the seat of Earl Bathurst and the site of one of the finest landscape gardens in England, laid out by the first Earl Bathurst after 1714. On Cotswold Avenue is the site of a Roman amphitheatre which, while buried, retains its shape in the earthen topography of the small park setting. Cirencester was one of the most substantial cities of Roman-era Britain.

Established in 1845, the Royal College of Agriculture is steeped in history and tradition and is the oldest agricultural college in the English-speaking world. The small campus, set in the beautiful Cotswold countryside, encourages a sense of community among its students. Students are offered a stimulating and unique learning environment in which to study, that both develops and encourages them to achieve their future dreams. With a population of 750 students the Royal College of Agriculture caters to its students. As well as academic activities, part of the student experience is centered on the environment in which to work and study. The Royal Agricultural College has one of the most beautiful settings in the country with the famous main building complete with quadrangle, styled on an Oxford college. All international students have the opportunity to use live-in study bedrooms close to the College's original quadrangle.

The College farms are based at three locations - all with very different farming conditions. Run on a strictly commercial basis, the farms provide a field laboratory for students and are used for farm classes and projects in practical husbandry, technical control and business management.

Main commercial enterprises on the farms include a 250-cow dairy unit, a 1650-ewe breeding flock, and 250 hectares of combinable cropping including organic enterprises. Research and demonstration projects, often involving outside funding and other external organizations, are a continual part of the RAC Farms' business and educational program.
