Financial Aid and Study Abroad

Financial aid is available to Texas Tech students going on an approved study abroad program.

Following is a checklist to make sure all steps have been completed in order to receive aid for the program.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. By listing Texas Tech's Federal School code (003644) on the application, students are applying for all federal and state aid programs.

Students going abroad wishing to discuss financial aid options should contact Veronica Camarillo in the Office of Financial Aid between the hours of 9:00am-4:00pm in West Hall 301.

Because of limited state grant funds, students receiving a scholarship will have their eligibility to receive these grants reduced or eliminated.

Since most Stafford, PLUS, and Alternative loans are disbursed via the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) process to Texas Tech University, all study abroad students are required to complete the Direct Deposit form with Student Business Services prior to leaving for their program.

If the financial aid awarded does not cover the program cost, students may want to apply for an Alternative or Parent PLUS loan. See the Financial Aid website for a list of PLUS loan lenders.

Students should check with the Financial Aid Study Abroad Advisor before leaving for their program to verify that loan(s) will be received via EFT. If loan(s) will not be received via EFT, students will be required to pre-sign loan receipts with the Office of Financial Aid.

All Stafford and PLUS borrowers must complete the loan application process through an online method called LOANS BY WEB (LBW) https://lbw.tgslc.org/. Upon receipt of an award notification, complete the loan process at http://www.raideraid.ttu.edu/.

The financial aid award may be disbursed 5 days prior to the beginning of the study abroad program. All tuition and fees must be paid before students can receive a refund.

For summer programs, a separate application for financial aid should be submitted online at the Office of Financial Aid web site .

THE FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION PROCESS SHOULD BE COMPLETED AT LEAST 8 WEEKS BEFORE DEPARTURE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE FUNDS IN A TIMELY MANNER. STUDENTS MAY VIEW AWARDS AT: http://www.raideraid.ttu.edu/.

Students must be enrolled through Texas Tech University for 12 hours or more to be eligible to receive financial aid for any semester or 6 hours for the summer.
